In 2004, a group of New York City area musicians forming the Gotham Wind Symphony, volunteered their time and talents to record a CD of children's music. The profits of this recording would go to benefit the daughter, Julia, of fellow musicians Anita Miller and Joe Reardon, who was born with a rare brain disorder called Hemimegalencephaly.
The CD includes both existing children's pieces as well as new original works and arrangments of children's songs written especially for the project by area composers and arrangers. The title of the CD, Music for Children...and those who listen with them, accurately describes the experience of this CD. The arrangements are intelligent, creative and often witty, making them accessible to very young children as well as being entertaining and engaging for parents, grandparents, and others who may listen along with them.
When we were asked to design the package for this CD, Canfield Design Studios president Kathy Canfield Shepard wanted to capture this same feeling in the artwork. She brought her watercolor painting talents to the project, creating a series of paintings influenced by the toy blocks she remembered playing with as a child. The images are colorful and educational for children, while also being fine art pieces, each uniquely beautiful and whimsical, appealing to people of all ages.
25 paintings were originally created for the CD design, some with letters and some with toys and other colorful objects. Over the next two years she expanded the collection to include the entire alphabet, the numbers 0-9, and 43 different toys or colorful images.
Canfield Design Studios will be continuously expanding the collection of products incorporating these block paintings, so please check The Swimming Paintbrush often for new items!
